How to Calculate Patent Bets
In a Patent bet, you have 3 selections for a total of 7 bets: 3 singles, 3 doubles and a treble.
Here’s how to use it:
- Choose whether you want to calculate odds or winnings.
- Enter your Stake (per bet), bet type (win only vs each-way) & odds format
- Enter your win odds and place odds for the selections (if applicable)
- Add any bookie bonuses or Rule 4 deductions
Press calculate and see your results if all win broken into 3 singles, 3 doubles and a treble. A Patent Bet has singles, meaning tat even if only one of your selections is successful you will receive a return. This is rare in an accumulator and highly-valued.

Patent Bet Calculators Explained
Does a Patent Bet Have Singles?
YES! In fact, this is one of the reasons why the Patent bet is a favourite among regular horse racing bettors. The singles act as insurance for a single in or place (if each way) against the accumulator not working.
Why Choose a Patent over a Lucky 15 Bet?
Consider the patent bet as a Lucky 15-lite. The patent only has 3 selections vs the Lucky 15's 4 selections, so it is smaller and suited for days where the outcome of each race might not be as evident.
What is an Each Way Patent Bet?
Each Way Patent Bets act as even more insurance against your singles. They ensure tht even in the worst case - one of your single bets only places - there may be a payout if the odds are good. So an each-way patent can work and be successful but often each way returns for this bet type are quite small.
Is a Patent Bet Popular?
Yep, a Patent Bet is as popular as a Trixie bet according to Google Trends and anecdotally, that is about right. We hear trixies, Patent and Lucky 15's the most in betting shops all across the UK.
What is a Patent Calculator?
Our Patent Calculator helps you calculate potential returns based on the odds you select. Remember it consists of 3 selections that make 7 bets including all of your three singles so there is quite a lot of maths to do.
When to Use a Patent Bet?
A Patent Bet is best used when you only have 3 selections that day you want to actually wager on. In the event there are 4 you should use a Lucky 15 as there is a higher potential return - but equally the likelihood of return is lower.
